Scratched glass rarely needs replacing

Most scratches in architectural glass sit in the top few microns of the surface — left by construction debris, careless cleaning, welding spatter or wind-blown sand. SONO removes them on site by machine-polishing the glass flat again, restoring optical clarity without taking the panel out of its frame.

Which scratches can be removed?

The trade test is simple: run a fingernail across the scratch. What it tells you decides the method.

Hairline marks & light scuffs

Fingernail glides straight over

Fully removable. Fine surface marks and cleaning haze polish out with a cerium-oxide compound — the same rare-earth polish used in glass manufacturing — leaving no visible trace.

Visible scratches

Fingernail feels it, barely catches

Usually removable. The area is machine-sanded with progressively finer abrasives, then polished back to full clarity. Done properly this is distortion-free; done badly it leaves a lens effect — which is why it is machine work, not a kit.

Deep gouges & chips

Honestly assessed. Removing this much material risks visible distortion, and on toughened glass aggressive grinding builds heat the panel may not tolerate. If restoration would compromise the glass, we say so and quote the replacement instead.

How on-site glass polishing works

Assess & test

We inspect every scratch, depth-test it, and check the glass type — annealed, toughened, laminated or coated — because each tolerates different work. You get a panel-by-panel verdict: restore, or replace.

Grind out the damage

For scratches with depth, the damaged layer is machine-sanded with progressively finer abrasive grades until the groove is gone. The work area is masked and water-fed, so frames, seals and interiors stay protected.

Polish back to clarity

Cerium-oxide polishing restores full transparency, working the surrounding area so the surface stays optically flat rather than dished. On toughened glass we control heat throughout — the panel is under permanent stress and careless polishing can break it.

Verify in raking light

Finished glass is checked in low-angle light, the harshest test for haze and distortion, and we walk it with you before we leave. If a panel could not safely be saved, you already know — with a replacement price from the same team.
